Iota programme

The Iota programme was DAF's attempt to develop sustained spaceflight. In the main timeline it failed before Uclea became a spacefaring civilisation; in the Iota alternate history it discovers that mortal consciousness weakens with distance from Ūrkléan.

Main-timeline programme

Iota survives through launch ruins, archives, propaganda, technical wreckage and cult language. Ūrkléan prefers the programme to fail because spaceflight removes living bodies from the planetary burden system and risks exposing deeper cosmology.

Iota Limit

In the alternate branch, crews lose dreams, desire, fear, emotional meaning, initiative and finally coherent personhood as their world-side soul connection weakens. The boundary becomes known as the Iota Limit.

Anchoring

Lodestone carried as anchorstone supplies a local reference. Refined Uclidium, called anchormetal, is stronger and more dangerous. Ships and stations are organised around anchorvaults.

Political consequences

Delta controls the supply chain of consciousness itself. A colony may declare independence, but without replacement stone and vault maintenance its population slowly stops being awake. The Forever War expands into stations, shipyards and convoy routes.
