Lodestone

Lodestone, also called Soul Stone, is the substance from which living planets derive consciousness. It is not merely a valuable mineral deposit: Uclea's Lodestone interior is the physical substrate of Ūrkléan's mind and the medium through which mortal souls remain connected to the world.

Properties

Ordinary matter couples only weakly to the field associated with consciousness. Lodestone supports a coherent state strong enough to hold stable patterns, memories and magical tuning. Exposed deposits can increase awareness, distort perception and interact with souls even when their true cosmological role is unknown.

The cracks expose parts of Uclea's Lodestone interior. This allows malformed components of Ūrkléan's functions to leak into the world as the Five Burdens.

Use and study

Dvergr encountered Lodestone in deep halls and developed practical methods for studying its resonance. Most human societies later forgot its meaning and treated surviving pieces as occult ore, industrial curiosities or unreliable magical material. The Dawn Dominion preserves the most continuous non-divine research tradition.

Lodestone can be used as a sink, anchor or resonant insert in magic, but raw material is weaker and less controllable than refined Uclidium.

Iotan terminology

In the Iota alternate history, Lodestone carried aboard spacecraft is called anchorstone. It provides a local phase reference that prevents consciousness from fading with distance from Uclea. Large vessels construct protected anchorvaults around it. Ground material may be powdered into anchordust, an emergency aid that later becomes an addictive drug.
