Magic

Magic is the deliberate use of a mortal soul to alter the probability of physically possible processes. It is best understood as tuning rather than command: a caster organises consciousness into a learned pattern, the soul couples that pattern into the field of Ūrkléan, and a compatible material transition becomes easier than its alternatives.

Currents and schools

The five currents are Memory, Change, Emotion, Nature and Pressure. Schools describe what a pattern does—restoration, conjuring, preservation, alteration, coercion, warding, divination or engineering—but do not correspond one-to-one with currents. Memory may restore a former shape; Nature may regrow it; Pressure may hold it together; Change may force matter into a new arrangement.

The same school therefore differs greatly between traditions and peoples.

Training

A spell is a neural-conscious movement rather than a sentence understood by the world. Learning resembles discovering how to isolate an obscure muscle. Teachers use words, gestures, emotions, rhythm, posture and physical tasks to help a student find the internal pattern. Repetition makes it reproducible; advanced training separates overlapping effects, controls the return path and closes the configuration cleanly.

Conservation and cost

Magic creates neither matter nor energy. It biases an available physical route. A fire pattern lowers the barrier to combustion where fuel and oxygen already exist. Restoration favours clotting, cell migration and tissue organisation using the patient's own blood, nutrients and metabolic energy.

Every effect also requires a return path. Cost may appear as heat, exhaustion, accelerated ageing, displaced healing, stress in nearby material or burden transferred into a prepared sink. Side effects reveal where the compensation went.

Historical decline and return

Household magic remains common during the early Exodus, but the Forever War destroys teachers, archives and apprenticeships. By the modern period it is largely forgotten outside the Dawn Dominion and isolated rural traditions.

After the Great Cataclysm, magic returns because it can be reproduced at village scale. One teacher, copied notes and a few tuned tools are easier to maintain than a hospital, semiconductor plant or continental supply chain. The resulting traditions are local, narrow and dangerous rather than one unified magical system.
